Webflow vs Framer: which is right for your startup?

Both are great, and both are wrong for some teams. Here’s how we choose between Webflow and Framer, and when neither is the answer.

Webflow or Framer? For most startups the short answer is: Framer if your site is mostly a handful of marketing pages your team changes often, Webflow if you publish a lot of content or need a structured CMS. Both let your team edit the site without a developer, which matters more than which one you pick.

When Framer wins

  1. 01Your site is under 15 or so pages, mostly landing and product pages.
  2. 02You change copy and sections every week, and want to do it without breaking the design.
  3. 03Motion and polish matter, and you want them without custom code.
  4. 04Your team already thinks in Figma; Framer feels close to it.

When Webflow wins

  1. 01You publish often: a blog, case studies, a resource library or job listings.
  2. 02You need a structured CMS with collections, filters and references between them.
  3. 03SEO is a main channel and you want fine control over every page’s structure.
  4. 04Several people edit the site and you need roles and a clear editing flow.

When we rebuilt the Lateral Frontiers website, the portfolio hub had 22 companies in a filterable CMS and a growing set of thesis pages. That’s classic CMS work, and with SEO built in from the start, organic traffic rose 25% in three months.

When neither is the answer

If the site is really a product (logged-in areas, dashboards, payments, heavy integrations), a website builder will fight you. That’s a job for custom code, usually Next.js, or a separate web app beside a simple marketing site. And if you sell products, Shopify is usually the better base.

How we decide with clients

We ask three questions: who edits the site, how often new pages appear, and what the site has to connect to. The answers usually pick the platform for us. If you want help choosing, or a site built on either, that’s our websites and CMS work, and most builds take three to six weeks.
