What is creative fatigue? It’s when the same people have seen your ad so often that they stop reacting to it, so your cost per result climbs even though nothing else changed. After managing more than $50M in Meta and Google ad spend, it’s the most common reason we see good accounts go bad.
How to spot it
Fatigue rarely shows up as one dramatic drop. It creeps. These are the signals we watch every week:
- 01Frequency keeps rising while reach flattens: the same people are seeing the ad again and again.
- 02Click-through rate slides week after week on an ad that used to be your best.
- 03Cost per purchase or lead climbs while targeting, budget and landing page stay the same.
- 04Comments go quiet, or turn into “I keep seeing this ad”.
Why new angles beat new colours
The instinct is to tweak: a new background, a different button colour. That rarely helps, because the person scrolling still recognises the idea. What works is a new angle: a different problem, a different hook in the first three seconds, a different format. One concept can carry several hooks, and each hook is a fresh shot at someone who ignored the last one.
“Budget scales what works. It can’t fix an ad people are tired of.”
The refresh loop we run
- 01Every month, new concepts go in, not just new versions of old ones.
- 02Every concept ships in several hooks and formats, so the data picks the winner.
- 03Winners get more budget; losers get cut within a week or two, not left running.
- 04When a winner starts to fade, we make more ads like it, not more of it.
This is how we work with Woof Concept, a premium pet brand where paid ads had let them down before. New channels reached 5x return on ad spend within the first year, with nearly 4,000 new orders, then 50% year-over-year growth after that.
What to do this week
Look at your top three ads by spend. If frequency is up and click-through is down over the last month, they’re tired. Write three new angles for the same offer and test them against the old ad. If you want a team to make and run that loop for you, that’s our campaign creative and paid ads work.
